Electric Motor for Hydraulic Pump

01/25/2007 2:26 AM

What is the power of electric motor that can be used for a hydraulic pump that will be used to lift a weigth of 2500N.help me to determine the power of hydraulic pump and motor?

Power required of any driver = force to be applied x speed of travel parallel to the line of the applied force x hydraulic system overall efficiency x mechanical system efficiency due to friction.

Power required of a pump = pressure rise observed x volumetric flowrate achieved in the pipe x electrical efficiency of the motor.

Apply units consistently in both cases.

Corrections:

"Power required of any driver = force to be applied x speed of travel parallel to the line of the applied force / (hydraulic system overall efficiency x mechanical system efficiency due to friction)."

"Power required of a pump = pressure rise observed x volumetric flowrate achieved in the pipe / electrical efficiency of the motor."

Excuse: low temperatures at the battery connected to the inlet terminals of the calculator. Brrrr....

You need to explain how you intend to lift the weight, e.g. direct lift via hydraulic ram or scissors lift, or other? Also what is the intended speed of lift required?

Answers will be needed before you can calculate the input.

You need to determine how fast you need to go and what pressure is required for the hydraulic cylinder you are using. If you know the effective area of the cylinder or cylinders you intend to use to raise the load divide your load by that area to come up with a pressure. Once you know the pressure you can calculate hydraulic horsepower by using the equation hp= pressure x flow/1714. Use 70% efficiency for gear type pumps and 85-90% efficiency for piston type pumps to adjust the required HP upward. The required flow would be based on how fast you need the cylinders to move. The faster you want to go the greater the hp required.

Addition remarks to HYDMAN1 easy formula: It apply only to US Customary units i.e. psi and gpm. The question from Guest indicates N (newtons) that is SI unit and motor power would be in kW not hp!

The formula in SI units is simpler, there is no conversion factors (1714). Units are: available system Pressure in Pa, flow in m^3/s (cubic meters!) power in W. Remember that radians/second (or rpm) of the motor are the factor too. Complicated? Find Internet source with examples, dont be leazy! If you do not understand physics you will have a high chance to make a mistake.

Dear All,

Kindly I would ask that from where did the number 1714 come from?

Thanks.
