Frequent Pipe Leakage Problems

01/25/2007 7:15 AM

I am working in company manufacturing vacuum salt. We are facing frequent leakage problems in the company. Can you people please suggest the material to be used in the brine and condensate line. For condensate the temperature ranges from 100 C to 60 C for different lines. Also the plant is very old so standardisation of the lines has to be done. Can you guide me in this task.

Try plastics for brine, either PE, PVC or ABS.

Try 316SS for condensate as plastics won't perform at the temperatures indicated.

For 100 C plastics or PVC tend to look like spaghetti. Threaded CPVC is your answer.

I found a link to a CPVC specification your use. http://www.harvel.com/piping-cpvc-specs.asp

If you are using 316 Stainless Steel pipe, use Teflon pipe dope (or some other pipe dope) DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE on Stainless Steel pipe as you will have leaks.

I agree. If possible I would weld the pipe & fittings and make connections with flanges.

You might want to look at Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP) that uses thermoset composites to wrap pipes. Contact me through our website at,

Hi,

I would use plastic pipes, even for condensates. Polypropilene can withstand up to 100 ºC.

If its the pipe corroding you could try super duplex stainless steel, it quite expensive though
