Filter Ratings and Hydraulic Systems

01/27/2010 4:59 AM

hello,

What are the basic differences between the filters rated as 3 micron filter and 10 micron filter in a hydraulic system?

A 3-micron filter will pass no particles no larger than 3 microns; a 10-micron filter no particles larger than 10 microns. Choose according to what size of particles the downstream system can tolerate. This assumes that the filter has not been punctured or otherwise compromised by excessive pressure drop.

Isnt there any other differences between both the filters?

No just the particle size the will filter out.

Just a bit corrections on the above. There is something called Beta ratio associated with the micron sizes.

Just go through these links (1) , (2) and (3)

If you want to be seriously in filter business (are you?) then you should study this along with the multipass tests

3 micron filter element means, it can remove any particle more than 3 micron.hope you know beta ratio concept. beta ratio is useful to compare filter elments of same micron rating. the pressure drop will be more in case of 3 micron as compare to 10 micron.
