PLC Function Block

01/28/2010 7:26 AM

Good morning. Thanks in advance for your support and help that I have had here from everyone.I'm working for a company that use more Siemens PLC (simatic v5.4+SP1) I'm there one year know. And sometimes when I have problem and I didn't have alarm on the screen, I truly don't know where to look. Just to avoid making more mess. I ask my direct supervisor to show me how to get inside the programme(function block)to be able to visualise input and output he always say he is busy. Can anyone tell me where to go buy or down load a doc about function block that can allow me to understand and be able to troubleshoot more professionally.

Thanks I have a great day

Siemens can. A phone call to them, perhaps?

Take a look at this wiki article. It should tell you enough about Siemens PLC's to guide you to a more informative question. Specifcity is the key since we can't be there with you. P.S. I'm guessing that if your boss doesn't have time for you, he doesn't know either!

Interesting (sad?) that you are being asked to service the equipment yet they don't seem to think it necessary to get you trained on the Siemens PLCs. Of course, S-5 training is more difficult to come by now because that PLC has been replaced by the S-7, but any decent Siemens Technology Center* should be able to help.

*STC = Siemens distributors who are trained and authorized to sell their PLCs (not all Siemens distributors are allowed to)

I always wanted to learn how to read and understand each of the FBD of the ALSPA and ABB advant controllers not untill i had to find the User manual that helped explain every Block. I tried to find it from the internet but i couldn't get what i wanted.

So try and find the User manual you will be able to learn as i did. Some peaple often want to keep their knowledge so that they can always be given the first call in case of aproblem. Generally evrey maufacturer has their own way of designing FBDs depending on their interests, but if you learn them they are too easy to use.

Hello Abdou, I am not in sales, but I do work for FasTrak SoftWorks, and we have software for the S5 processors that uses funtion block. There is training on that. I'm one of the trainers, but not on that product. You can email me or reply if you want more information.

some blocks of code cannot be opened/viewed or modified but you can view the inputs and the outputs. One example is the PID block from Siemens. As Jraef pointed out, it is quite sad that people are expected to maintain/ troubleshoot equipment without being given the necessary training.
