Hi..

I'm currently work as a chemist in one of the oldest plant in country name Malaysia.

How do we maintain a good boiler chemistry, its specs or the chemical usage and strength?

Anybody got a good article please commets.

Try this organisation. There are many water treatment companies that have quite good literature on the internet, or buy this book or one like it.

right now we are using 8kg of trisodium phosphate + with 250L of water, is it good enough?

how about ammonia normal strength for feedwater?

Contact a reputable specialist boiler water treatment chemicals company and enter into an arrangement with them.

Read the book and visit the sites recommended by Kaisan - it is all out there.

You realize that a boiler can be low, medium or high pressure. It can have mixed metals, copper steel, etc, thus there can be no fast answer.

A boiler is expensive to buy and to repair, it is costly to have your factory shut down for a month while the boiler is fixed and production = zero.

I have worked with boiler chemical companies. You can buy the chemicals and the test kits and follow their procedure, or you can buy their service and their man come in at the proper intervals to maintain your boiler chemistry in the proper area.

You can also make a study of the books and figure out what to do and buy chemicals and test equipment hope that you save your boiler and save a few $$.

I suggest this is like reinventing the wheel by starting with triangular wheel = a little bumpy, improvements bring you to the octagonal wheel, and then a man come by and offers to sell you round wheels for $5 and your boss takes one look at your costly and unproductive research efforts and gives you the sack...

This is worrying- that a chemist doesn't know the 1st thing about water treatment- back when I worked with steam boilers it was a requirement that a certificate was held by operators covering all aspects of boiler operation- mainly for safety reasons- a boiler is a bomb under operating conditions. Every boiler was inspected by safety authorities annually- & any faults fixed before license was renewed for another year. Since those times, what is called multi-skilling has entered the picture- where any dumb worker can supposedly look after a boiler- often without any understanding, supervised supposedly by a chemist etc..

Bear in mind that the chemistry of water varies from place to place and from water source to water source. A treatment regime for, say, Dagenham will be different from a treatment regime for Dartford for example. Although the two localities are adjacent, their water is derived from different sources, with different alkalinities, salinities, pH, etc.. Therefore a treatment solution that works at one place will be different from the one that works at the other.

Water chemistry is control by God and then contaminated with human being based on one need and greed.

In general one need to avoid oxide of calcium or any which is easy to make water hard and then next step is to avoid addition of chemicals which your company is contaminating water with.

If it is normal then sodium phosphate is good chemical.

Since you have not spelled out what you want to remove from water it is hard to say what chemistry you will like have.

Contact water treatment company or google it and you will see different chemicals used different companies.

There are good number of chemical also described in patent and good number are expired and is available for use

But you need is based on your requirements and if you tell what you have I will be able to suggest what to use

It is also good to have a water softner suplying your boiler feed water tank. This helps to eliminate mineral deposits in the boiler and keeps the conductivity of the water down.

I agree with all the previous poster relating to having a water chemistry company maintain your boiler. I have it done here and have very few issues with my boiler system.

I run a low pressure (15psi) boiler and it is about 25 years old.

Mizie Chemist

Industrial Water Treatment can be very complex and carries serious safety implications. It is mandatory in North America and I would suspect most jurisdictions that the boiler operator carry some degree of certification to operate boilers. You may have the first step with a degree in chemistry but you still need to get specific training in boiler treatment. The question you have asked suggests you need training and it cannot be provided by a CR4 thread. Boiler operation is not a place for guessing. You will need a good text like Kaisan recommended or other books are available like Betz Handbook of Industrial water treatment and there are even better texts out there. Some of these texts may be expensive to purchase and you may want to do a pdf search for Industrial Industrial Water Treatment. You will still need guidance from a professional for hands on training and you should follow the recommendations suggested in this thread to hire a contractor that specializes in boiler treatment and chemistry. These professionals will help you operate and usually provide the chemicals needed. The safety of operation is critical (boilers can explode) and plant downtime is expensive. Recognize your limits and then expand these limits in a good safe manner.

Dear Sir,

As you have read many thoughts, there is no magic answer to your question. however, at least I can help point you in the reight direction once water quality is established and type of boiler, flow rates are also know and your regeneration set-up.

Please email me at srock@resintech.com and we can discuss in more detail.

Best of luck,

Seth RocK

Hello,

It's necessary to have a good treatment and for a good treatment you will have a good sampling and analysis.

For a good treatment you need a good demineralized water and control parameters (conductivity and silica).

On the turbine machinery, focus on the pH for the treatment (basic area around 9.2/9.4 upH to avoid the corrosion) and the conductivity (see the specifications - control specific or/and cationic conductivity).

Reson of the high level of temperature and pressure, you need a sampling system to analyse the differents parameters.

Hello,

Your question is very broad

You may have the boiler manual, it should give the information that what quality of water you need for boiler. From this point you can decide what parameter you have to monitor.

Boiler feed water quality is depends on the pre-treatment to boiler, what are the pre-treatment available in your boiler?

What is the parameter you are checking in the steam?

You have to consult your engineer regarding the purpose of maintaining the water quality. in my case I will say that carried out to avoid the corrosion and scaling in the boiler. You can decide what parameter has to monitor for this objective.

For you problem, there are no specific answer and it is totally depend on your system and requirement. Keep it in mind that I am repeating again, read the boiler manual for some more information. And consult your chemical supplier too.
