ID Controlled and OD Controlled Pipes

02/02/2010 11:56 PM

I am still not clear in ID and OD controlled pipes.

Some of the answers i got are

O.D. controlled

: This designation is used when the outside diameter of the pipe is the controlling factor in the selection of the pipe.

I.D. controlled

: This designation is used when the inside diameter of the pipe is the controlling factor in the selection of the pipe.

Pls clarify on which parameters and for which services these should be considerer .

Also clarifiy thes ID ans OD pipes.

Thanks in advance

If it's any help - the OD is always the controlled diameter for manufacture, irrespective of whether the pipe nominal size is stated as nominal bore (eg steel pipe to inch spec) or pipe OD (eg metric plastic pipe). The actual bore varies with the wall thickness, determined by pressure rating. Then the same fittings suit all pressure classes.

There may be exceptions to above for very high pressure ratings, but as a general rule it's OK.

Cheers..........Codey
