Antistatic Flexible Connector/Hose

02/03/2010 11:18 PM

Does anyone can help to identify hoses or flexible material that are antistatic to conveying our flammable product ( Exspandable Polystyrene beads) using pneumatic system?

Google "anti static hose".

Utilize hose and fixtures made specifically for flammable - explosive (liquid) substances.

You should be looking for hoses that are electrically conductive.

The term "antistatic" is inappropriate.

All fuel hoses should be made from antistatic material and or in some cases have an earthing wire built into the hose. Check out fuel hoses which would suite your application.

Use metal pipe such as electrical conduit or some of the grain conveying thin wall pipe that has snap fitting joints. There are wire wound hoses that contain an integral ground wire. Use these only when you need to connect your metal pipe to a machine or if you can't get your fittings in the correct configuration.

Tie both end of the flex hose and the piping together with grounding wire and connect all the grounds together to the building ground.

Goodyear makes a complete line of transfer hoses, including static discharge.

Check out the following link:

http://www.newageindustries.com/vardex.asp (lot of different manufacturing companies of similar hose) We do not use this exact brand, but do use similar product.

We use such hose as illustrated for transporting Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) Powder from a bulk storage hopper to the powder coating system. The hose is "clear plastic with wire reinformcement" the wire winding is subsequently earthed (grounded) thus providing a drain for any static charge. For transporting any material, such as polystyrene beads, that will induce a static charge the wire winding in the hose will drain that charge. In some instances to improve the earthing we have pulled a copper wire through the hose, thus the copper wire is in direct contact with the material being transported.

You will know if you got a problem when you walk near the hose and the charge makes you hair stand up or a bolt of static charge comes across and curls you toes! Keep in mind that dust in the air around the hose, when not earthed, is explosive!!! A dust explosion is deadly!!! Equipment just does not burn . . . it flys apart!!!

Usually an antistatic hose made with a copper wire that could be electricity conductive. And since during the transmission of the explosive materials through the hose, the static would cause explosion. To avoid the explosion the static wire is very important. Please review this address to see how the antistatic hose looks like.
