the rig is used for water well drilling and we need to weld a lot of casing insitu and so far have had to dissconnect the ECM each time

Mac Tools, for one anyway, offers a surge protector specifically designed for welding on vehicles. It is clamped across the battery terminals and has booster cable sized leads. Up to you to determine how effective this might be, but feed-back from a 4WD fabrication shop and a body shop is that they DO NOT WELD on a car without one in place.

I looked all over the Mac Tools site and was unable to find the surge protector for the ECM that you mentioned. What is it actually called? I searched on 'ECM' and 'protector' and had no luck. Thanks for your help.

Well dang, That is the unit that I'm familiar with. I couldn't find it either. I did find this, and maybe it's enough to get you going in the right direction:

http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/dfxdf601.html

Searching that p/n turned a lot of hits, including a bunch of nay-sayers on a welding forum.

I also found mention of a Snap-On product referred to as an "Anti Zap Surge Protector" , but my search attempts at their site kept stopping short of any results. Perhaps their html isn't friendly with Firefox? dunno.....
