Seeking silicone rubber

02/14/2010 2:25 AM

Where can I find a supplier of silicone rubber materials to manufacture a soft, pliable artificial skin? Each time I do a search I get breast forms-no raw material suppliers. I don't need breast forms; I am a man and have not had a mastectomy. I just need a pourable low or room-temperature curing rubber compound that mimics the feel and approximate weight of human tissue.

Thanks in advance.

In which case, do not shy away from breast forms. On the contrary, contact some manufacturers of such prostheses; they can probably give good info on materials and techniques. This is exactly the sort of technology that should be adaptable to other tissue simulations.

Search for "two part rtv" and you'll get plenty of hits.

GE and Dow Corning are two major suppliers.

Good luck.

look at a few pages of these.

You will want a two part silicone so you can adjust the components to get the correct texture.

The single component self curing ones with water from the air might not be what you want.

The DOW people have sample kits of various type that you buy, test and zero in on what you want. Breast silicone is a plastic sack with a high viscosity silicone oil inside it = not what you want.

BCC makes an excellent Shore 40 D silicone, platinum catalyzed that almost feels human.

The owner of the place I was working at brought through his stockbroker, and after picking up one to the mold halves made a very similar comment.

Being a smart-ass, I offered her a groud floor opportunity in my "Lifelike Linda" franchise! She turned red as a beet, and the owner had one hell of a time keeping a straight face!

Hi Mani,

Are you a doctor? If not, stay away of medical suggestions, it's not your business. No harm but no one told us it's replacing human skin. Let them visit web-sites and contact companies who are well known what is silicone rubber, Gil.

Dear Mr.Becker, In this case it IS my business. I am engaged in the development of biomedical devices for many decades. Have used silicone rubbers of various types for many medical applications including implantable devices. Actively worked with companies like GE in producing silicones with specific properties. The original post did not specify for what it was intended. The term has specific biomedical implications.

Not proselytizing. My apologies if I sounded out of the way.

Hi Mani,

I am obligated to take of my hat about your accomplishments. There are valueable. However, the blog system is not to advertise capabilities to treat, cure, and help medical problems. Who knows where comes the suggestion??? Anyway, this is not the right place for advertising. All your explanations are suggestive to people with some skin difficulties but I let your judgement about it. If the blog was originally made for medical help, sorry and I let you do the work with people involved, I am not a doctor. Wish you a good day, Gil.

there seems to be a disconnect about the term skin.

Some think there is an attempt to create replacement skin that replicates human skin in all respects. I get the impression that he want to create a skin that feels like skin to the touch of people. Possibly for a real-doll type of application?

Possibly not. Perhaps he will enlighten us.

This website, which is not safe for work, being xxx rated, is one such. I leave you to type in the www I can see why they want human feeling skin.

Don't use RTV or other industrial silicones; raw, they will irritate the skin, pores, etc. What you are probably needing is theatrical latex which is available on the web...just search under that term and go shopping. This is much safer for use on live people and looks and feels like regular skin.

good luck.

Two companies come to mind. http://www.smooth-on.com/ and http://www.freemansupply.com/. Both have life casting supplies and a great tech department.
