Standards for 11-KV Cable Trench

02/14/2010 3:35 PM

Sirs:

Will you please help me find relevant article in NEC or Electrical Standards, if it is allowed to install control and monitoring cables in a 1.5 meter wide X 1.5 M deep x 6 m length of 11 KV cable trench without barriers. There was an earlier proposal to lay these cables separately on cable trays underneath 11 KV switchgear.

Thanking you all in advance.

Rudy C. Fernando

My Friend,

Always remind to yourself that different insulation level shall be ran in separate cable ran/trench, even in cable tray, it should have separate cable tray in level.

In trenches (direct buried cables) control and instrument cables should have separate trenches or at 300mm apart from power cables (LV or MV). NEC Article 310

LV power cables run together with control (control cables have same insulation level) MUST run PROVIDED there is a barrier (a piece of phenolic board or metal separating the two cables.)
