Bypass Pressure Settings for Hydraulic Filters

02/16/2010 6:32 AM

pls justify the following statement:

In hydraulic filter, generally, a higher by pass pressure setting will allow for longer element life.

Because more dirt will accumulate on the filter, which will take longer.

Stick to manufacturers specifications. Do not change them.

Pay attention if you bypass the filter it is NOT any more active, dirt goes in the system back, which leads to high wear and even to fine componenst destruction. Better use filters with pressure drop indicators and put 2 in parallel with only one active. When the indicator shows that the filter element is full you can by pas to the other and change the element so that you permanently have an element clean in reserve.

Simply put, the higher the by-pass pressure setting, the more restriction you can run on your filter before it by-passes the fluid around rather than through the filter.

Without knowing all your details, I can not say what the restriction should be set at but a few things to adhere to are;

Never alter this setting from the filter manufacturers recommendation's.

Never allow the filter restriction to be at or even near the by-pass pressure setting.

Always have clean filters on hand.

Have your oil analysed regularly.
