My advice to you is to buy one.

Then if you still want to "design" one, you'll have a pattern to copy.

It takes people years to become proficient designers. Perhaps you should consider a course in mechanical design, unless that's why you are asking the question.

Do you intend to design the radio controls and actuators, as well? If yes, then you'll need a coulpe of years of electrical design courses, as well.

Good luck.

How to Design a Model Car | eHow.com

Just one more word before I go. Communication is important, especially if you want people to do things for you.

I am not a dude. Contracting words so that you don't have to put forth as much effort when typing does not enhance your ability to communicate, it just makes you look lazy.

Good luck with your homework project.

Dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know.

I never did figure out what I did to deserve the wrath of Roger Pink. I didn't catch the OP's response, if there was one. Oh well, it's their ball. I gotta play by their rules.

I was about to ask the RC CAR geek if he knew the difference between designing something and building it, but, decided that would be a waste of time. And after seeing his response I didn't need to ask anyway.

I'll go harass someone else for a while.

Cheers.

In the pipe post, a guest chimed in with a pretty snotty observation about your offered advice. Roger Pink was on it in a flash, and deleted both.

The RC car guy in OP sez "...but i need to design my own RC car", and in #3 confirms it is homework. If he had been more forthcoming with that, a different tack may have been taken.

Ah, well...

  • Check-out the monthly magazines on this topic at better newsagents.
  • Check-out local radio-controlled vehicle clubs (Cars? Aeromoplanes? Boats?) locally.
  • Check-out specilaised model shops locally. Yellow Pages telephone directory?

From #3 I think he expected lynlynch to be impressed that he is studying BSEE.

Kind of an interesting approach, the student looking down upon the people he is asking for help.

I have a friend who is similarly inclined, he has been complaining for a while that you can't find a basic kit anymore, the RC hobbiests seem to have moved to 'build it yourself from the ground up' or 'buy it ready to drive' with not much in the middle.

If you want the scoop on serious RC Car design and fabrication you would be well advised to go to the RC geeks directly. Check local hobby shops, search online for plans and go hang out at the track and talk to the guys out there. Otherwise I say buy one ready to go and modify it.

Good Luck

Miniature linear actuators for steering, throttle, clutch, and brakes. And gear shifting, if really fancy. Hobby shops dealing with robotics should be a prime source.

As others have said there are plenty of resources available for building RC vehicles using readily-available RC components (or building your own electronic and mechanical parts), in fact there is a large market for parts to either customise existing kits or build one from scratch.

A google search of "RC car" and "RC car parts" produced over 14 million hits and had plenty of good hint and supply sites in the first page of results alone.

I would advise using ready-made radio transmitter and reciever hardware because the gear is better and cheaper than virtually anything someone can make out of parts (unless you want to build it for the fun and learning experience).
