Purpose of Orifice Plate Or Orifice Meter

02/22/2010 12:54 AM

What is the purpose of Orifice Plate or orifice meter using in pipie line ?

My Knowledge the orifice plate which is using to measure the flow rate.

I have another question also. If it is using for measuring the flow rate, why dont we take directly tapping from the pipe and give flow rate meter insead of orifice meter.

I just want to know whether anyother reason is there or not .

thanks in Advance

The orifice creates additional loss which will produce a pressure difference that can be measured and used to calculate the flow.

A pipe can also be used but the actual friction loss won't be significant enough to result in an accurate reading.

There are different types of flow meters available, one of them is the orifice flow meter.

The flow meters work on one of the effects of the flow and are

a) Differential Pressure Type- where the flow is obstructed and the effect on the pressure is used to determine flow - the obstruction is caused by orifice, Venturi, varying the cross-section itself or some other means.

b) Velocity flow meters measure the velocity - eg Pitot tubes, calorimetric etc.

c) Positive displacement - Turbine flow meters

d) Mass flow meters- measuring the mass movements - Coriolis effect, thermal flow meters etc.

- The orifice plate by itself has only the function of obstructing the flow and it has other uses than the flow meter (eg the control valves work on the principle of controlled orifice to maintain upstream or downstream pressures) even in certain cases we put controlled or some times fixed orifice plates to control flow volumes through different branches from a common header.

As previously stated, the orifice produces a useful differential pressure to be measured. If one just tapped the pipe without a pressure dropping device (orifice or venturi), the distance between the taps would be so large that it would be impractical. This is due to the system occupying a defined space and most plants have a limited amount of space in which to work with.

Some other sources of info for self study;

ISO 5167-1, "Measurement of fluid flow by means of pressure differential devices - Part 1: Orifice plates, nozzles and Venturi tubes inserted in circular cross-section conduits running full"

ISO 5168,"Measurement of fluid flow - Procedures for the evaluation of uncertainties"

Instrument Engineers' Handbook, "Process Measurement and Analysis, Volume 1"

www.more-solutions.com

And as previously stated, Omega has some great training material.

Good luck
