Rotating a Small Roller

02/22/2010 1:32 PM

I need to rotate a small roller (ground + hardened steel dia 2.5 mm L 11 mm) around its axis for visual inspection. I am thinking of using 2 driver rollers of dia 10 mm placed such that there contact line with the driven roller is 30 degrees below horizontal. These driver rollers are to be driven by a suitable belt. The driven roller will rest on these two driver rollers. RPM required of the driven roller is around 100. I am not sure if such an arrangement will work satisfactorily. The gitches I foresee are:

1. The driven roller may slip on the driver rollers

2. The driven roller may not rotate steadily - may wobble / jump up

Anybody has any experience in this area and can advise me? All suggestions are most welcome.

How about a really low-tech idea--Pick it up between two pencil erasers, and twirl it slowly by hand, inspecting with a jeweler's loupe?

This be mechanized with a few simple and inexpensive components.

OK - let me try to explain in more detail.

This mechanism is for an automated vision inspection system. Also, the rollers being inspected should not pick up contamination during inspection. The system works like this: The roller under inspection (dia 2.5 mm) is automatically placed in between the two driver rollers (dia 10 mm). The driver rollers being in motion cause the smaller roller to rotate. While this roller is rotating it is imaged by a camera placed suitably. Once the smaller roller rotates thru' just over one full rotation it is pushed to the next station where appropriate sorting is done.
