Clay Separation Machinery

02/23/2010 1:26 AM

I would like to find a machine or series of machines to separate out the clay from soil. Sifting out the organic matter and gravel isn't such a big problem, but I am looking for the clay and sand. If I can get them in separate piles, then I can recombine them in any ratio I desire, in order to make cob or rammed earth buildings.

This is going to be very difficult. Clay is normally washed out of "clayey sand" if required. The clay stays in suspension in the wash water, while coarser fractions settle out. The problem then becomes one of drying out the "clayey water" to recover your clay.

You would be better off measuring the clay content of the material you have, then adding clay, or adding sand to adjust the final ratio up or down as required.

Hope this helps some.

Cheers,

Frank

I think you have to kill the soil and turn it into inorganic matter...

I did it many years ago with the pulser pump. It worked but it was not quick. You could modify the process. I think you can find some details on the tripod site. type in pulser and tripod and you will get the site.

I saw a website a while back in a very old pottery factory in Japan. They hammered the clay to break it up then seperated out the clay from the larger sand particles in a water. Through stirring the clay was picked up in the water and then settled out.
