DVD Driver Parts and Repairs

I wanted an exploded diagram of an external HP dvd 940 drive, and of an external Plextor PX-610u drive, so that I could decide to try and repair it myself or not. I could not even find out how to take the outer case of the external HP drive (It seems to snap together, but I don't want to break it) apart. An internet search came up with lots of hits, but no real mechanical details. Many ads touted 'experts are on line' and 'quick answers to your technical questions' but of coarse for a fee. A repair manual search for the devices found nothing. Is there any internet site that is dedicated to suppling detailed mechanical information on electronic products?

Unfortunately, these devices are so sensitive, and so inexpensive, that they are throw-away items. I have repaired several by removing foreign objects, and a few by snapping or bending some part back into position, but those (the ones I was able to repair) are a small fraction of the total I've tried to work on... In the most interesting one, the motor armature was held in position solely by its magnets, and had been pulled crooked. Just a slight shove in the appropriate direction, and the armature snapped back into place. Voilá - it worked!

I have a stack of repair manuals for 3/4" VCRs, but I've never seen one for a CD or DVD.

You are completely right, the parts would cost as much as a new unit.......with no guarantee of success......

its probably a standard interface, he buy a new one with the same interface...
