Sony Stereo - Installation Problems

02/24/2010 8:53 PM

so my father and I instaled an new sony sterio in a 84 300D TD mercedes and created a short that isnt bad ... but you know isnt good.... and i cant find a place where i can find if its the darn yellow wire to plug in to the ignition or the red one. but there is a gray wire that goes no where that we capped off, and it branches off of the cigarette liter. so i think i should connect those two ... hopefully some of you can help me with this

thank you for your time

A new stereo should have instructions. There is going to be a wire for illumination, that will go to the dash lite circuit. A wire will be for an electric antenna. A wire will be for radio power, going to a circuit from the switch. A wire will be for memory, will go to a wire that is hot all the time, like the lighter, check it. There will probably be a ground wire. To find it, it will be the one with no resistance to the case of the radio.

If you don't have instructions, google it. Always works for me.

Look like you have a negative to positive wires, let us assume you have red, yellow, black and the rest of the wires for speakers, light and antenna from your stereo unit then I would connect the red to the power, yellow to accessories of the ignition and the black should connect straight to earth I mean body of the car, do not attempt to connect this black wire to any wire of the car unless you are sure that it is earth wire what I mean it is sometime misleading when you try to check the wire which is inactive then the positive wire will become negative due to current flow through load.

Try to use accessories wire instead ignition wire for your stereo

Good luck
