Hummer Going Out of Production

02/25/2010 5:10 AM

According to news reports the Hummer is going out of production.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

That's one I can live without. The 4 door 6,000# pickups now popular are decadent enough. The monster H-1 gets about 8 mpg.

IMHO they're goofy, too much bulk and those little windows to try and see out of. Tahoe all the way, much better vehicle.

I assume this is just the commercial vehicles going away, the military units will still be produced.

No, actually not. The Army will take delivery of its last 2,500 HMMWV's from AM General and then it's done. The HMMWV will go the way of the Willies Jeep.

The Hummer was the Paris Hilton of the automotive world.

Overrated style, skin-deep build and those riding it only did when they could be publicly seen doing so.

Man what a bummer,
To lose the Hummer,
I wanted one to drive this Summer,
Impress the cats
And make a noise,
Frighten the girls,
But wows the boys.

Nah,I don't really want that Hummer
My car's dumb,
But they are Dumber.

I say it's a damn good thing. We are only loosing the civilian hummer ie H2 and H3.

The H1, the only true Hummer, the one that the military uses, is still going strong. The H2 and H3 are just scaled down wannabee Hummers for Yuppies with too much money and and small appendages (ego problem?) They have nothing in common with the real HMMWV, except for the name and the styling, vaguely.

They don't have any of the attributes that make the HMMWV so noteable. No 4 wheel independant suspension, no extra wide track for off road stability, none of the mil-spec heavy duty componentry. They are basically just overpriced Chevy trucks with a body kit.

Needless to say, I won't miss them at all.

Exactly right! GM was just making money off wanabees by selling them a Humvee look a like using an SUV chassis and powertrain. Nowhere close to the true military Hummer's capabilities (or cost).

Bad for those who still want them. Good for everyone else.

Supply and demand. If enough people were still buying them, they would still be built. It's a tribute to capitalism!!!

GA to all those who say it's a good thing.

If there's one subliminal message that I don't want my grandkids to be exposed to it's the philosophy which is promoted by the 'Hummer' thinking.

Rampant wastage on a grand scale.

Cheers, Stu

The Hummer is the answer to a pretty silly question, but I haven't figured out what that silly question was, there are so many it could be.

From a fuel consumption point of view the petrol auto Landcruiser is thirstier but it does not get the same flak, and I'm not sure why not. Maybe because it was originally intended as a real workhorse.
