MSMoney File Issue

03/03/2010 3:04 AM

After weeks of hand typing in tons of data from several years pre-dating my collection of fairly current digital update files, I find myself locked out of the file.

When I attempt to open the file and enter my password, as I have done for several weeks now, I am now presented with this pop-up: "Money has detected that you did not close the file'*****' before exiting. Money now needs to verify the information in your file. . . . ."

Upon clicking "YES" I get a pop-up reporting that my password is incorrect, and have been unable to cure this.

Question; since I do not have that PC connected to the network for privacy and security purposes, is the program trying to use my .net Passport, which is a different password, and attempting to 'phone home'? Unless the program loads the file, there are very few options on the menu.

I have attempted to restore from back-ups, repair the file, even in frustration I uninstalled the program and installed an earlier version. Same result, worse graphics.

I'm not usually prone to spontaneous weeping, but this has tempted me. Any comments or suggestions?

I struggled with this frustrating (I'm being polite) program for the better part of two days, and finally succeeded in restoring a backup file from not too far back just a few minutes ago. Now I am re-doing the input from the missing period and validating where I am with each account.

I re-installed the MSM2006 program and worked with some suggestions on a help site I found for MSM (yes, thank Google, not Microsoft) that was impossible to find on the MSM official site.

Thank goodness I could still get DOS syntax right. Basically I had to locate and delete the contents of the TEMP files under MSM the old fashioned way. I tried working with the sav.exe provided (but not overtly) with the software installation, but that failed to "sav" me.

This is my first experience with the dread of loss of some very significant work and data since I efficiently had shredded some of the source materials. I am usually very good at backing my data up, but whatever went wrong this time was apparently a shared experience based on the number of sites that offered password recovery and other help software created specifically for this dilemma.

You can bet that I will be quite vigilant in the future when working with strongly secured files.

I have been reading heavily on the subject of the emerging "smart Grid" in the electric utility realm lately, and this experience has really driven home some of the risks of securing that system. I can just imagine the stress on the operator who slips up on his keyboard and locks out a city for a day or two.

Thanks for the first response, and also for all of those who were working on a response. I knew this was the place to find a way through this.

Regards, CJM
