Cisco VPN Client Error

03/03/2010 12:42 PM

I am having a issue with a Cisco VPN client software version 5.0.06.0160.

**************

Initializing the connection...

Contacting the security gateway at xxx.xx.xx.x...

Authenticating user...

Contacting the security gateway at xxx.xx.xx.x...

Negotiating security policies...

Securing communications channel...

Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client.

Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapter.

*******************

I do have a HelpDesk ticket submitted to the IT dept that supports this VPN but it may take them awhile to respond since I am a vendor so I am posting my issue here in hopes of receiving a corrective answer in a timely manner.

The OS is Windows 7, VPN was working correctly until a couple days ago, no new software or updates installed or system setting changes since the last successful connection with the VPN client. Pinged the security gateway 4 times with an average 150mS ping and the very first packet was dropped but was the only one. I have tried the basic things such as trying a wired connection vs. wireless, rebooted the computer several times, ran a repair of the installation and also a complete un-install/reinstall which consisted of the automated un-install and I also manually deleted the empty folder left behind, emptied the recycle bin and rebooted the computer prior to the re installation of the VPN client software.

All other programs are working fine and nothing shows up on any virus scan.

Idea's?

I have been working with two IT support groups and no true solution has been found. After several reboots (at least 200+) and reinstalling Window updates one at a time plus a dozen other things the IT support tried on the servers no clear culprit emerges. Sometimes the VPN client works properly a lot of times it doesn't. I am still open to suggestions.

Are you using that little program that you need to run that gives you a temporary ID and password before trying to log in?

On the other hand, are you trying to get into a Cisco server? If so, they run VMware... I think you said that you're trying to log in as a Windows machine. Cisco servers create virtual adapters behind the physical adapter for traffic shaping.

There may be a problem with the way IT has configured their server allocation software--or there may be a problem with the mezzanine board on the server.

Vermin, thank you for the reply. At this time since I can connect using a laptop running Vista Both IT depts are taking the easy way out and saying it must be a Windows 7 issue, never minding that I have been successfully connecting while running Windows 7 for the past two months.

I will still forward your thoughts to them for review.
