I believe the Hall Effect sensor (or in the case I used them - a keyboard pushbutton) was basically a movable magnet, when it is pushed through a coil of wire it creates a current that would be sensed as connection/button pushed.

Seems to me it was a little more elaborate than metal leaf in a switch.

Hall sensors do detect magnetic fields, but no coil of wire is involved. Check lynlynch's link.

The hall effect is often used to produce a sensor that transduces current to a voltage signal that is proportional to the current over a defined range. This is useful for measuring current in a digital environment as voltages are a lot easier to read than currents thanks to ADCs (analog to digital converters). See, for example, LEM (http://www.lem.com/).

If you would tell us exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish, there is a good chance someone here can and will help.

Hall effect sensors have many applications. Which one(s) is(are) of use to you?
