I saw recently a machine with a little 13 foot long stainless steel links conveyer belt transporting cheese flavored potato chips into a bagging station. Is this what you got in mind??

Yes. You can find it in a design manual from a manufacturer.

Let me get this straight before i design it for you...

you want to move belts from one side of the factory to the other?

1st material is to be conveyed

2nd qty of material to be conveyed

3rd belt inclination c/c distance

You must be kidding, in voting yourself OT. These are some of the most relevant things to consider.

Hello,

I can try to help you if you provide me the elements necessary to make calculation (obstructions, weight, speed, nature of the material to be transported, already existing material or not, drawings or plans of l' installation,… any technical element capable of m' to inform on the conveyor to provide).

Many of fresh engineers from India come up with such questions. This forum is not a free consultant to give such detailed service. Better learn yourself with help from conveyor mfrs, books on conveyors, or search on net. I feel ashamed when such questions are asked from engineers from my country, members will only laugh at you.

How this can be a GOOD ANSWER? Anyway, I am not disputing it.

My issue is not to discourage folks asking such questions or even for that matter dumb questions.

No question is ever dumb, my friend. And to discriminate Fresh Engineers from a particular country is worse.

If I were you, I would refrain from such comments. These comments are very very derogatory.

People have become selfish. As senior engineers, we owe it to coming generation,

and as leaders, we have to guide Young Engineers and not to discourage them.

If u do not have an answer, SHUT UP and read others' comments.

My dear senior country men, please guide young engineers to the relevant Technical literature, notes etc so that their curiosity is satisfied.

I will be remiss if I do not not say that please do not feel offended.

Every body needs a little--- to come back on track.

Thank you for your reaction, but this discussion seems to me it turns in round. To correctly define a conveying belt and certainly a conveyor, one needs a certain number of technical data, that's a fact! I have the experimentation, and it would not come me to the idea to propose a solution which does not make it possible to satisfy the application. I propose to transmit to me the data technique via my private address email is vdn.marc@gmail.com and I will try to provide calculation before may be some clarifications.

I wanted to reply but gave

suresh sharma

a GA instead. You have completely missed his point and now I am not sure what your out burst is all about. You should be ashamed of your self for mouthing off in such a way.

Every body needs a little--- to come back on track.

To me, the OP was never on track, so how can he come back on. If he wants answers he should prepare his questions in a way that would show that he has at least put some research into the subject.

suresh sharma:

"I feel ashamed when such questions are asked from engineers from my country, members will only laugh at you."

This can happen anywhere, resulting in the same embarrassment. Just throw it on the ever moving conveyor, it usually ends up on a heap anyway, Ky.

HI Raj,

I love my country as much as you do. I never wanted any hot discussions on the subject nor I was dying for GA. In past I had observed that many such questions came from our country that is why I have posted my reply. In past I had ignored many such questions asking complete designs for equipments. Tell me who will give such designs?. It is property of the concerned mfrs. Well if you can give such designs then please do it I will be very glad.

Hello BSChoudhary;

Here's some information for you:

A conveyor belt (or belt conveyor) consists of two or more pulleys, with a continuous loop of material - the conveyor belt - that rotates about them. One or both of the pulleys are powered, moving the belt and the material on the belt forward. The powered pulley is called the drive pulley while the unpowered pulley is called the idler. There are two main industrial classes of belt conveyors; Those in general material handling such as those moving boxes along inside a factory and bulk material handling such as those used to transport industrial and agricultural materials, such as grain, coal, ores, etc. generally in outdoor locations. Generally companies providing general material handling type belt conveyors do not provide the conveyors for bulk material handling. In addition there are a number of commercial applications of belt conveyors such as those in grocery stores.

The belt consists of one or more layers of material they can be made out of rubber. Many belts in general material handling have two layers. An under layer of material to provide linear strength and shape called a carcass and an over layer called the cover. The carcass is often a cotton or plastic web or mesh. The cover is often various rubber or plastic compounds specified by use of the belt. Covers can be made from more exotic materials for unusual applications such as silicone for heat or gum rubber when traction is essential.

Here are some design specifications you will need in order to properly spec. out your belt conveyor.

What kind of information are you looking for?

1/2hp for every 50' of belt?

What is the weight of the material to be conveyed. There are all kinds of factors that have to be considered.

The type of belt being used, is there an incline, the width fo the conveyor. The speed of the conveyor is also important. Is the conveyore being used in a dry or wet environment.

The company I work for is MAF Industries, we are global and we have a division in China, which I think is closest to you.

We also have a branch in Australia but I don't have any contact information for them.

You should visit our website. We manufacture conveying and packaging equipment for packinghouses, primarily for fruits and vegetables but we will also do conveyors to suit any specific needs, and that include automated palletizing.

Yes you can. Try looking in the CEMA handbook. It might be easier to contact a conveyor manufacturer. Rapat makes solid conveyors, and they have facilities in the Philippines and the United States. A conveyor manufacturer is not likely to give you all of the relevant calculations unless you actually purchase something from them. They will, however, size the belt, size the motor, and give you a belt speed when they send you a quote. You will need to supply them with some information so that they can design your belt. That information includes the material being moved, its density, the rate at which the material needs to be moved, any angle of incline or decline, and any special notes about the process.

There are several books where you can find the information.

"Conveyors and related equipment", by Spivakovsky

"Mechanical conveyors", by Fayed

are the two best I know.

Then you have plenty of information in manufacturer manuals.

Download or request copies from Martin Sprocket, Goodman Conveyors, FMC (Link-Belt), Fenner Dunlop, Phoenix and Contitech.

For a crash course, the fundamental formulas of belt conveying are laid out in the catalog of Belt Service.
