Cable size has nothing to do with a cable's classification in this case.

A 'power cable' is (by definition) a cable used to distribute electricity. Any cable can be called a 'power cable' if distributing or transporting electricity is its primary function. For example an electrical cord used to connect an electrical appliance to the wall socket in a house is called a 'power cable'. A 'control cable' on the other hand is used to distribute control signals (a different primary function hence a different name).

I thought there is a standard for cable to be called a power cable...thanks for your quick reply

Different industries sometimes use different names. I am not aware of any electrical or industry standard that defines a power cable by physical size or cross sectional area (perhaps it is just industry-specific 'slang' you have come across).

When can a cable be called a power cable???

When it is carrying power. Seems just that simple.

However, different codes often define the nature of a "Power Cable" as something specific to that application or service.

200 sq mm of cable is about an AWG single O cable - a bit more than 8 mm in diameter - pretty big - This wire is rated for about 150 amps or so. If this is not a power cable, I'm not sure what I would call it.

I agree to the comments provided by others, but here is some additional information:

Cables are identified by three categories in this context: Power cable, Control cable and Instrument cable. These categories are based on what the cables are carrying.

Power cable: These are the cables whose function is to supply either single phase or three phase or DC power (such as Feeder cable, Motor power cable, lighting cable etc.). Generally, the maximum number of conductors for power cables is 4 (it may contain 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 conductors) and the minimum size is 12 AWG. For selection of power cables, the ampacity and voltage drop is major concern. Most of the cases, the current flow through power cables occurs continuously for a certain period of time.

Control cable: These are the cables which are used for electrical controlling purpose such as the cable used for motor start/stop, schematic wiring, and pressure switch sensor cable etc. Generally the maximum size of control cable is 10 AWG (most cases it is 12 AWG) and it contain as many as conductors. The ampacity and voltage drop is minor concern for selecting this cable. Current flow through control cable is momentarily in most of the cases.

Instrument cable: These are the cables used for carrying instrument signals in instrument system. Most common size of instrument cables is 16 AWG. The conductor of these type of cables are grouped either pair or triad or quad. The individual pair or triad is shielded to protect the signal from outside noise.

When cables are run in cable trays, identifying the cables of these categories is important. Random mixture of all types of cable in same raceway is not allowed by code.

MS

As suggested by you, I as a Professional Engineer certify that statements made by you for Power, Control and Instrumentation cable are True.

Generally good post, although 200 sq mm is much larger than single 0, which is a little over 50 sq mm. (200 sq mm would be about 16 mm diameter.)

When can one call a spade a spade?

The standards people sometimes have some weird names for stuff but to use that terms in everyday life would be absurd.

In contracts you may however need to refer to the standard or code to avoid getting incorrect items.

But a cable that don't comply with the standard is still a cable.

2nd part of your question: your 200mm2 when it is conductive metal is a power cable.

As the name implies, any cable conducting power is a power cable.

Now, if the power is in the milliwatt range, it is still power, therefore instrumentation cable is also be designated as power cable. Or, A steel cable on a crane lifting a cargo cable towing a car, could also be called a power cable...

However, the Name "power cable" used to carry electrical power is named "power cable" when it's carrying capacity is:

"Low power cable"...10-25Amp.

"Medium power".........26-50Amp

"High power".............51Amp and up

In this case your cable, rated for approx 150Amp, is definitely a power cable.

I found this classification in an old edition of the American Electrician's Handbook, and actually never seen it in use...

Hello,

I would simple say that the cable is power cable.

200mm2 cable is not required for instruments and controls.
