How to Calculate Units Per Liter (UPL) for Diesel Generator

03/11/2010 5:09 AM

I am using 62.5kva diesel generator . If it runs for 100% load what is the upl for this generator? The Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC) for this generator is given as 164gm/bhp-hr. This is a 4 cylinder and 90BHP engine.

Once the density of the diesel fuel is known, the rest is 40sec work with either a pocket calculator or with log-tables (are these still taught?).

The problem is trying to extrapolate actual consumption from the stated value is problematic

Is the consumption linear?

doubtful

I think your signature line is in effect [ by the way I always thought the the fiction quotient was 85%]

the OP needs to do some testing before he'll get much useful data...

Does 164gm/bhp-hr mean 164 grams of fuel per brake horsepower per hour?? If yes, then this data is sufficiently clear to easily convert into other units.

So what is your problem, vinoth.ac ?

<...brake horsepower per hour...>

Brake-horsepower-hour is a unit of energy

Brake horsepower per hour is meaningless.

Hp per hour means the work done by 1 hp in 1 hour. This is equivalent to 2686x10^6 joules. This is what there is.

How come you guys are down on Loki? He is exactly right. I gave him a GA.

Right is also Electronaut and Blink as we have to consider the generator too.

So the fuel consumption is higher or the power produced per unit (liter) fuel is lower.

You get roughly 3.6 kW / liter of fuel at the specified settings.

Correct is also Garthh saying that the consumption is not linear and changes with the load setting. Different power output = different consumption.

How come you guys are down on Loki? He is exactly right.

A hp-hr (like a kilowatt-hr) is a unit of energy, equal to .746 x 3.6 x 106 = 2.686 x 106 J.

Loki gave a figure for hp per hour (hp/hr) which would be taken to mean a change in HP (a rate) i.e., an acceleration. (As in: 32 feet per second is a rate. 32 feet per second per second is an acceleration.) It's not that anyone is down on him, it's just that the number is off by three orders of magnitude and the units are strange.

(Although this may have to do with which side of the pond you are on. Putting math into words can be a bit different from place to place. )

164gm/bhp-hr = 219.84gm/kWh.

Density of diesel fuel = 850gm/l.

219.84gm = 0.2586 litre.

Therefore, one litre of diesel fuel can produce 3.87 kWh (1/0.2586). In other words, UPL for this engine is 3.87units/litre of fuel.

Pl. let me know if I'm wrong.

Ordinarily, if a consumption is given in gm/hp-hr, this refers to engine efficiency, not to overall system efficiency. The generator itself is apparently 93% efficient -- very good. So your answer lies first in the unit conversion, and then in adjusting for generator efficiency. You must know the specific gravity of the fuel used.

This sounds suspiciously like homework.

I recently bought new diesel generators, and was pleasantly surprised by the speed and reliability of service I received from http://www.gopower.com/ Their diesel generators are built with the highest quality diesel engines in the world. The safety aspect of a diesel generator is also substantial. The diesel used in a diesel generator set is not flammable as it must be compressed in order to ignite.

Dear Mr. Vinoth.ac,

This topic has been discussed few times earlier.

Please search in the CR4 itself or this link will give you more details, where I have also given details. Pl. see at

Re: How to Calculate Units Per Liter (UPL) for Diesel Generator

SFC/BHP =164 gm/hr, for 90 BHP 164X90=14,760gm/hr,

gm to ltr Conversion 14,760/1000=14.76 ltr/hr

Multiply this with Density of Diesel .845

14.76*.845=12.422

12.422 ltr is the Engines Actual Consumption @ 100% Load.

62.5 kVA*.8 pf = 50 kw is the units generated per hour @ 100% Load.

Finally units generated/Fuel Consumed i.e, 50/12.422=4 is the UPL.
