CR4 Spell Check Workaround for Internet Explorer

03/12/2010 1:23 PM

Several members have complained that the CR4 spell checker only checks the first paragraph, when using Explorer as a browser.

In XP this never happened to me.

I just fired up a new computer with W7, and sher nuf, the CR4 spell checker doesn't seem to check the whole post. Dunno why, and it seems unpredictable, but I've been using the spell checker built into the new Explorer, and it seems to work OK.

I suspect you already know about "Ladle Rat Rotten Hut," an infamous example from about 50 years ago. Alas, semantics checkers are much harder to devise than spelling checkers....

HAH! Had forgotten that 'Oldie but Goodie'!

Looked it up on the web (Ladle Rat Rotten Hut), copied it into a CR4 reply, and spilt chukkar'd it. The CR4 spiel chalker found three errors! Did the same spell check in M$Word... did not bother to run it all the way through... it found several dozen in the first three sentences.

Of course, CR4 does not check for syntax, semantics, double words, punctuation capitalization... I do think it does a pretty good job finding words that do not even exist. Aside from that, we are sort of on our own.

I have noticed several members voicing a concern regarding the CR4 spell check feature. If nothing else, it makes me a little more aware of my typing, knowing my mis-typed blather will receive only a glance before being exposed to the world and thus, my misguided drivel.

Other news (old news in this case):

Outlook Express spell checks only in French under some large number of conditions -- as it does on this machine... which is different than the machine I used for the thread-starter. MS recommendation is to find a third-party application that works right.

MS ditched OE for W7, and it takes a little poking around to find Windows Live Mail.

I use that wonderful (!) product known as Vista with IE and have no spell-check problems, especially if my radiometer is properly aligned.

Quick before Bwire shows up

using Firefox you can at least use that spell check, even if it does take a bunch of extra clicks to get there [vista, xp].

I'm on my Linux box this morning & I can just right click any word that gets underlined, boom suggestion, no fuss no muss

may outlook rest in pieces

I have a hotmail account, don't use it much, gmail is by far easier to use,

anyone who ever mailed me [or vise versa] is in my addressbook by default, the more I mail someone the higher on the suggestion drop down they move

there are ads, only text, no flash player extravaganzas on the side bar

This new machine has been bugging me, because it just works as advertised. The network pieces were recognized and connected automatically, the printer was recognized etc. So I have not had the opportunity to scream at MS. That makes me sad.

However, your mention of ads reminds me that the version of MS Works that came on the computer is the crippled version which has ads -- you can pay $40 to get a version without ads. That's not the way it was advertised: it said "MS Works," not "Crippled MS Works" I'll put Open Office on this one, so it's not an issue, and the ads are not that much of an issue either... but in principle, it's annoying.

I note that the download for Open Office (which has niceties like saving to PDF lacking in MS Office) is 1/10 the size of that for MS Office.

so if I want to spend even more money [on vista now] I can have a OS that works & can find my printer without having to uninstall/reinstall everytime I plug it in?

gee what was I thinking, expecting to get a working OS when I bought the full version?

<vista rant never off>

back to the mail, had some comcast mail accounts, which also had the annoying animations.

the animations just distract & piss me off

for me the targeted ads on gmail are much more effective, I occasionally click on something

I've been impressed with Amazon, which gets a lot of my dollars. First with books, but now with general merchandise, they email me with stuff I might like, and they are very often correct. I recently bought a Dewalt miter saw from them (which I could get cheaper there with free shipping than from my local Home Despots). Shortly thereafter, they suggested some pretty neat stuff. I resisted the temptation to buy same, but they were right on the money.

On Gmail everytime there is a reply from del there is no end of the cat related items on the side bar, it will pickup on keywords in the text of whole conversations & make suggestions

when there replies from the various HHO hobbits, plenty of links to the scammers sites

intrusive you bet
