30KW Motor cable selection

03/13/2010 8:46 AM

Will a 16mm X 4 Core cable be ok for a 30 Kw 380 Vac 50 Hz 4 pole motor ( DOL Starting)?? Distance from panel to motor is MAX 20 meters.

The FLC of a 30kW motor at 380V may be in the range 53 to 60A.

A 4CX16sq.mm copper cable is sufficient for this application. But a 4CX16sq.mm aluminium cable is barely sufficient for this application.

I would suggest that you go for a 3CX25sq.mm armoured Al cable for this motor. There is nothing wrong in laying a 4C or 3.5C cable, but the fourth core is not required for the motor except for motor TB earthing, if the provision is available inside the TB.

Since it is not clear from your question whether the cable is armoured or flexible, it is better if the cable used is armoured.

Thanks, the cable is in copper and is flexible..

The only reason for the 4 core is that I have a a 20 meter length of 16mm x 4 core flex copper cable....non-armoured

If the cable is not laid underground, then even a flexible, non-armoured cable would suffice.
