some light poles are smooth round (diameter); some have a fluted cross section. i need section modulus formula for the fluted shape. i already know the round one.

Frankly, I've never seen an established (or published) Section Modulus formula before for fluted sections. That doesn't mean that they don't exist...

Now, if you have an accurate AutoCAD or similar cross-sectional drawing file of the fluted section you are investigating, than you can break-up the overall section into an equal number of identical segments, each of which you can establish or measure the area.

From there you could use calculus to determine the Moment of Inertia as well as the Section Modulus. You do know how to use the calculus you learned in engineering school do you? If not, than your quest may be sunk from the get-go!

Also, as a short cut you could ask the light pole manufacturer for the digital drawing file as well as their calculated Area, Section Modulus and Moment of Inertia. I'm sure their engineering department has already done the math so as to ascertain the resistance strength against vehicle impacts and wind loadings. Make sure to verify the sectional properties given to you! You'll also need to know the material type, and the Allowable Shear Stress and Allowable Bending Stress if your doing a structural analysis of the light pole!

If the pole is tapered, the properties will vary along the length of the pole, further complicating matters.
