That's right, and as an aside, the rate of loss of mass, due to conversion into energy, is an impressive ~ 4.5 x 10⁹ kg/sec.

Never, though its long-term future isn't bright. After gorging itself for about another billion years or so it will begin to grow brighter and expand. At some point after that it becomes a red giant, swallowing up the barren remains of the three innermost planets and then contracts to become a white dwarf.

The mass of the sun is 2 x 10³⁰ kg, so dividing that by 4.5 x 10⁹ comes to over 10¹³ years. Current age is about 10¹⁰ years, so a way to go! But in practice it will not last anywhere near that long. Another 10¹⁰ years would be good going. I believe theory says it will expand to a red giant in ~ 10⁹ years, destroying life on Earth in the process.

But it will see you and me out!

BTW, if you want to check the 4.5 x 10⁹ kg/sec, energy received at Earth is 1.4 kW/m², so if you x that by the area of a sphere of radius = Earth's distance, gives total power.

zero. the sun is not burning, it is fusing. there is no combustion on the sun. hydrogen atoms are fusing to become helium.

Jeez -and I thought solar power was green, but it turns out to be nuclear. Now what are we going to do with all that radioactive helium?
