http://cr4.globalspec.com/comment/540708/Re-Compressor-high-discharge-temperature if you can't get the info from the maintenance manual that was supplied with the equipment or the maintenance procedures in your organisation!

Do NOT use anything other then what the OEM recommends. In compressors, the oil is critical, (more so on some then others, screw compressor is very critical.) I know that we at IR (makers of compressors) design around the oil for max. efficiency. Substitution could cause a total system failure, and NOT covered under warranty.

Then again, we sell compressors, ummm, if you swap oils, you'll need to buy another compressor, we'll have to sell it to you, let me think here...

Oh by all means, use what ever you like, no problem.. , it's all good.

The question is not only compressor, it is any machine that uses the oil, is designed around a specific oil.

depending on the machine/design, this oil may have

- a specified viscosity.

- EP Additives

- Norma/ Low viscosity gradient

- Special properites- eg low stiction

and so on.

You have two choices- go along OEM recommendation (second choice)

get hold of an real hydraulic expert, and he may be able to tell you about the latest in the application for few $s - both for his pocket and also you have to shell out to the oil company. But in the end most of the time it will be worth it.
