The XLPE cable has a semiconductor layers provided. The main insulation of high voltage cable is done by extrusion and is sandwiched between two semiconductors. The semiconductor layers are essential to give proper contact between conductor and insulation. This will avoid partial discharge and progressive deterioration of insulation of the cable.

The purpose of the semiconductor layers is to influence the electric field strength within the insulation layer.
