Marshalling Cabinet

Hello All,

Why are Marshalling Cabinets called so? What does Marshalling actual mean?

I wasn't able to find anything concrete on the internet, but I believe it's like a main or central cabinet, where all peripherals tie into.

The term comes from railroad marshalling yards.

Just like individual freight cars are directed and assembled into a train in a rail marshalling yard, field wiring coming from or going to divergent field locations, is re-arranged to control system I/O requirements, often with signal conditioning equipment
