Starting a Fire Pump Motor

03/19/2010 9:51 AM

Can you start a 12 lead motor across the line, for a fire pump. I have a patterson fire pump controller for my fire pump which is rated 250hp and is protected by a 2000A disc switch. My practice has always been to connect the motor per the connection diagram on the motor nameplate. There is no diagram on this motor nameplate for across the line connection.

Can I still connect it across the line?

Sure you can, but that doesn't mean your electrical system can handle it. There is a lot more to making that decision than just the physical connections to the motor. If a fire starts and you need the pump, you do NOT want to bog down your incoming transformer and cause a voltage drop that makes it so the motor stalls!

But assuming you already know the system can handle i, you can look up "12 lead motor connection diagram" and get some standard diagrams to use.
