In instrumentation, ESD is a TLA for Emergency Shut Down.

There are other terms related to this, such as SIS, PSD, F&G etc. Here is what they are:

SIS - Safety Instrumented System

PSD - Process Shutdown

F&G - Fire & Gas System

SIS is the Safety Instrumented System which includes the Emergency Shutdown (ESD), the Process Shutdown (PSD) and Fire & Gas System (F&G).

So, SIS = ESD + PSD + F&G
