IR Source

02/07/2007 11:04 AM

I find that reclining under a fixture of 24 heat lamps each operating at 25% rated voltage permits me to feel comfortable at a temperature 12 degF cooler than otherwise possible. I would like to find a replacement for the lamps which does not produce the lowest frequency IR light which is stopped by the air and rises above the fixtures. Up to half of the energy may not be making it down to the spot desired. I think I need about 1000 watts maximum adjustable to lower levels, too. Low cost is important.

It would be a sad world if everyone was the same...

Maintenance level high. Low convenience.

Well, there is always the home microwave mod. The water in your body provides heat and you can adjust the energy level for comfort. Just keep moving :)

As for IR heat. many of the traditional methods from the roman heated flues in the floor to modern heat pipes in walls are in fact infrared heating at long wavelengths.

Might be a good plan to help sick people who cannot thermoregulate. sensors will watch body segments and adjust the IR to maintain at a set point.

I googled "high frequency infrared" emitter and basically saw only patent disclosures. I'd like to see more progress in this area. I remember the story of the camper who got toasted near a radar dish.

Yes it would. We'd still be picking berries and throwing spears.

Put a heater in your waterbed. Oh wait, you want it radiating in from above! Well, http://oikos.com/esb/37/radiant.html

http://www.infraredheaters.com/ceiling.htm

http://www.toolbase.org/Technology-Inventory/Interior-Partitions-Ceilings/radiant-ceiling-panels

http://www.twapanels.ca/heating.html

And a few dozen more when I googled "radiant ceiling tiles".

They work pretty good. We use them in Canada to heat the people in skating rinks without heating the whole building. The ones you use now are good for keeping food warm in the "out" window of a fast food restaurant...they suck for large areas, like a whole work station, or a bus shelter. Leave them in the restaurant, and get a decent ceiling tile. They can replace existing acoustic tiles in offices. Pretty neat stuff. Warm a factory floor with a tenth of the energy of a conventional furnace.

Indeed, for a permanent project, this method of heating is excellent. Floor installations of radiant heating are well-known. But the ceiling installations can operate at a higher temperature. This way, they radiate at a higher frequency which penetrates the air better. Heat radiated from above produces less draftiness and even the floor stays warmer than with forced air heat.

The overhead ceiling tiles have the further advantage that they are not necessarily permanent. Because they can replace an existing acoutstic tile, they can be moved from over one work station to another fairly easily.

Those electric panels look quite useful. Yet, hopefully I can find something radiating at a higher frequency. I'm thinking emission at wavelengths from 1 to 10 micron should be pretty good. Even the new "heat ray" has too long a wavelength if it is around 1000 microns.
