Electrical Engineer that Needs Experiance

04/09/2010 12:32 PM

Hello,

I graduated with my Electrical Engineering degree in 2002, and I was offered a position as a Graduate Teaching Assistant after graduation. I completed my classwork for my masters, but in my final year I became very sick, and have not been able to finish my thesis. Within the last 2 years my health has returned, and I have been attempting to get back into the engineering field, but my lack of experience is making it very difficult.

The university I attended was a small, and they did not offer internships, so I did not get any work experience, and that along with the large gap in work history has probably made most employers worry of giving me a chance. I was wondering if anyone had this problem, and if anyone had any ideas about how to get some experience. I would also welcome any suggestions you would have.

Thank You,

Penglos

what about aiming a bit lower and getting into something related to your studies, this would keep the money coming in and get you some experience who knows you may prefer the new role.

When applying for jobs i work on the principle if i think i can do it i apply, if your adaptable you will soon pick up the new skill, and it looks good on your CV, trained in one thing worked in another.

Shows your versatile

My advice is check for maintenance positions. You would be surprised what maintenance men encounter, and are expected to know. Once in a company, get familiar with their phone system, security system, lighting system, backup power, etc. All that stuff is sophisticated electronics.

As a maintenance man, it won't be unusual for you to be examining the systems.

Once they realize you can fix the systems, you won't be doing maintenance anymore, and you will get lots of experience.

Companies have to pay big bucks for this service from contractors, and if they can have somebody in-house, it saves them a lot, and you're close at hand.

I suggest you that search switchgear manufacturers in your area near you live. They will hire you atleast as an Assistant or junior engineer. But you will be designing electrical switchgears and plc automation systems,it will give you more experience in a short period.

Try it then let me know.....cheers
