Advantages on Star-Delta & DOL Connection on 3-Phase Submersible Pumps

04/13/2010 10:03 PM

I have a project storm water pump station. I will ask this question regarding the DOL & Star-Delta connection. Because the Submerssible Pumps is 90Kw, 3-Phase, star=380Volts, Delta=600Volts. Since our Supply Voltage is 380Volts only. Is there any problem in starting this submerssible pumps on Direct On Line Connection? Please help me. Thanks.

None, provided the feeder upstream and the cable downstream of the starter and the starter components themselves are capable of handling the extra starting current involved with direct-on-line as compared with star-delta.

Refer to British Standard 7671 for cable sizing.

There is no problem starting the pump on DOL.Remember that the FL current in star in this case is higher by about one third of that in delta. In star, the current is about 170.93amps and 108.26amps in delta.

Already, the data is clear that with 380v,the pump should be connected in star while with 600v,the pump should be connected in delta.Since your available voltage is 380v,the only connection for the pump is star connection with DOL starter. So there is no problem.

Generally,Star-Delta starters has the advantage over DOL in reduced initial high starting current, reduced cable size, which also reduces cost, compared to running the pump or electric motor in DOL.Star-delta starting also reduces local utility kva demand charges.

Pls note also that star-delta starter connects 3-phase motor in star and later in delta with the contactors, but DOL starter hv the motors permanently connected in star or in delta in the motor terminal.
