Pumping a Paste ... Any Ideas ?

04/14/2010 9:29 AM

We're make this thick paste as part of our process at the moment with a high shear motor and then it is spread by hand .. Does anyone know of a suitable pump/system I could get off the shelf to try ... We tried using a pneumatic grease pump with a custom applicator with some success but was wondering if anybody had any other ideas ..

The pneumatic pump didn't offer enough paste / was limited by the diamater of the pipe...

Thanks All

Thanks in Advance.

Try a positive displacement pump such as a peristaltic pump or a gear pump.

You might also consider a progressive cavity pump.

Or even a caulking gun, for which there are both manual and powered versions.

For paste, I like the progressive cavity pump best, because they usually have a hopper that the paste is pumped from. The other pumps would have to be fed somehow. Paste doesn't flow.

If a progressive cavity pump (PCP) doesn't give you the pressure you want, you may want to combine it with a long stroke piston type positive displacement pump (PDP). The PCP can supply the suction side of the PDP since the paste doesn't flow very well. You will however get your discharge in pulses. If this is a problem a tank can be added to to system between the discharge of the PDP and the applicator to smooth out the flow.
