Laptop HDD

04/18/2010 11:06 PM

Hi folks,

i have a Dell Inspiron 6000, 2005 vintage. It came with a 60GB IDE HDD, which was max at that time. It also came with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, which is why i do not want to replace it with a new one, since Dell doesn't offer that superb resolution any more. i use it for 3D modelling using Solidworks and motion analyisis using VisualNastran4D. It does an outstanding job.

However, i ran out of headroom in the HDD, and asked Dell what they can offer. They said 120GB max, at the price of an arm and a leg. i thought this is not on, and got a Seagate IDE 160GB disk at ~$78 and put it in, and restored everything from the old drive. Windows explorer shows all 160GB(minus the system need of course) and i expect no problems in using all of it. However, experts tell me that the BIOS in my machine will recognise only 137 GB. My question is ... is this a problem ? Have i done something wrong ? If i have, is there anything i can do to correct it ? Any help welcome.

Hi kvsridhar,

Are you actually having a problem now?

experts tell me that the BIOS in my machine will recognise only 137 GB.

That may be, but the software that came with your new hard drive will get you past this problem. If your system is seeing the full 160 GB, you're OK.

No, you have done nothing wrong !

Thanks Mike. i am relieved. i have developed a healthy disrespect for the 'experts' especially in the IT field, and regrettably, especially those who work in the Indian offices of US multinationals, pardon my saying so. It seems to me that business reasons sometimes overshadow professional ethics...

I don't blame you my friend. While the capitalism that started with free-enterprise was, I believe, originally a good thing, the ensuing machine it has created has it's own set of problems. When viewed from the outside, I am sure America appears as immoral as Rome was in it's last days. However, there are a number of us that do not hold with the majority. We remember the value of liberty from the oppression of Government for all people.

You are so right. During my career, i have had the privilege of working with outstanding Americans .. the 'salt of the earth' kind...mostly engineers at Milwaukee, Boston, Asheville NC, Beaver PA .. so on. They made me realise what made America great. Unfortunately, the MBA types took over, and we Indians seem to managed to get the wrong part of the US values here. My apologies if i sounded accusatory of USA, my crutucusn was aimed at our own people here.. i am very fond of America in fact...my son works there after all

Thank you. Perhaps my English is a result of misspent youth, reading everything in sight (like Perry Mason all the way to Thomas Hardy etc) and not reading textbooks. Also bunking classes and watching Hollywood movies starting from "To kill a mockingbird"....

Any laptop or desktop bios or OS from ~2005 should be able to access the full amount of your new drive. Since your OS shows you the correct size, your upgrade is complete. However, you should try to find some new and more informed "experts".

G'day,

Why stick with Dell? I have hear and read of many complaints of Dell laptops failing just after the warranty expires. Then Dell won't fix them.

Just a it of info, do your own research.

You may want to Upgrade your HD or even your MB. Maybe a USB HD will expand the storage you need. Can you upgrade or overclock the processor?

Re: Laptop HDD

Reason i don't want to buy a new laptop is the high resolution that is no longer offered by anyone. If i have to buy, i will probably go for an Apple. (Even though using my software on windows would be like driving a Ferrari on Bangalore roads )

i do have usb hard drives which i carry when i travel, but the i ran out of memory in C drive, so the need to upgrade... thanks for your help.

If you use a USB HD (hard drive connected via USB port) you can have whatever size your BIOS can access. You could then set this disk to be whatever drive you wish. You could use your C drive as a boot disk and OS disk. Put your files on the USB hard disk (Drive D:?) and bingo, all the space you need. Maybe you'd Like to have just your data files on the new HD or you could put programmes there too. Whatever you wish. As long as the new disk in included in your path (usually done at boot time) it should work.

Re: Laptop HDD

Hi,

The Windows operating system always shows less than size of the HDD. The other thing you may have is that Dell normally has a hidden compressed partition which has a copy of your original installation on it. This is how your system can be restored if something happens to destroy your "C" drive.

You should actually be able to put in an even bigger HDD. As a rule of thumb, if you fill up more than half of your HDD, the system will start to slow down more and more until you get to the almost full mark.

Check out the HP website under Small and Medium Businesses for high end machines. I am currently using a mobile workstation that has 1920x1200 resolution. My desktop workstation can go higher.

Or you can call the Small Business Group directly at 1-800-888-9909.

As an added value- The HP small business computers come with what you want on them, including Linux, XP32 or XP64 or the "newer" MS products as well as Office if you need an new version (or load your old version) and NO ADWARE OR SAMPLE PROGRAMS

So-For extra space use an external USB hard drive. You can put your Doc files on it, your email, etc., your programs on the build in hard drive and every thing else on your external drive. If not everything - then your photos videos on the external drive. Could be an external flash drive. And then you could take your movies to another computer if you need.

Usually, threads die a natural death i guess. However, i would like to close this one with heartfelt thanks to you all, who have given me much more than what i originally thought i could get on this forum. My laptop is up and running without any problems with a 160 GB Seagate drive. Thanks a million
