Okay, they work by desalting crude oil.

Salts that are frequently in crude oil are calcium, sodium and magnesium chlorides. If these are not removed from the oil several problems arise in the refining process. As dvader1000 wrote, desalting is removing salt from the crude oil. The salt is actually in the water that is in the crude oil, not in the oil itself. Desalting is usually the first process in refining. Content is measured in pounds of salt per thousand (PST) barrels of crude oil, so less PST means higher grade refined.

The crude charge consist of oil and water and some gases.

The water is actually the salt solution from about 200,000 ppmv per pound of the salty crude

dilute with water - with emulsification during mixing - heat - Electrostatic separated water from oil - separate salty water

This crude charge is first heated (nominally about 60degC @ 10 bar) is first mixed with dilution water to further dilute the salt. Emulsifier may be added to assists the mix.

The heated emulsified crude then passes though an electrical field (30-30KV) here the water (conductive) molecules are separated from the oil. The oil rises while the salt water falls.

The water is now removed with the salt.

Gas given of are vented or recovered.

There are many other aspects of the treatment to consider.

- oil viscosity

- Caolescense

- Electrical gradient

- proximity of electrodes

- polarity of electrodes

- electrical frequency

- droplet sizes

- chemical demulsification

- temperature and pressure of the crude charge

- types of controls

- mixing thoroughness

- composition of the crude charge

Well, that my $1 worth.
