Piezoelectricity and Thermal Imaging Camera

04/28/2010 7:58 AM

Hello!

Can you write me the steps to make piezo electric generator and thermal imaging camera?

My school has asked me to make project on any topic related to science. Can you suggest me a good level project . If yes write the steps of construction of the respective project.

We appreciate your being honest and stating that this is a school project. Thank you for that.

Two things to consider:

1) We do not do homework and since you are not providing any work you might not get what you are looking for.

2) We function with somewhat proper English here. Real words with capital letters at the start of the sentence are best.

by the way sony cameras have very good infra red capability its called night shot.

place infra red filter in front of the lens to cut out visible light to make it better.

its not the info you after though

I don't know where you are located so some of my suggestions may not work for you.

A piezoelectric generator should be fairly easy for you to demonstrate as a school project. For the simplest approach, I'd purchase a typical barbecue grill igniter from a local hardware store. This device contains a small spring loaded hammer which impacts a piezoelectric ceramic disc to generate a ~10-30 kV spark.

CAUTION: The spark energy is very low and should not be a health hazard by itself. However, if someone gets "zapped" by the spark they will certainly jump and could easily sustain physical injury due to the sudden reaction.

Regarding a thermal imaging camera, this is far too complex and expensive a project to attempt. I suggest some research and a poster demonstration.

The IR images you can capture with standard cameras covered with an IR filter are only "near visible IR" (1 - 0.8 micron wavelength) which is not really a thermal image. For a true thermal image, you want a LWIR (long wave infra red) or FLIR type imager. These capture the thermal infrared (5 - 15 micron wavelengths) typically radiated from people, animals, surrounding objects, etc. These device are very complex, expensive, and take some training to use effectively.

You could try to ask a local sales rep (for one of the FLIR cameras), or maybe a local Fireman or Police Officer (if they have one for emergency use) to come to your class to demonstrate one. Many will probably decline, but you may get lucky. They are complex devices to use and a demonstration by someone trained to use it is a fantastic learning experience.

Best wishes on your project.
