Calculating Voltage - Please Help

05/02/2010 1:20 PM

R1=30Ω R2=20Ω R3=20Ω R4=10Ω R5=40Ω R6=10Ω I4=4A
I need to calculate U (total voltage)
schematic:
http://i43.tinypic.com/2jvbx2.png

I tried this:
R23=1/(1/10+1/20)=10ohm
R234=10+10=20ohm
R2345=1/(1/R234+1/R5)=1/(1/20+1/40)=13,33ohm
Rv=R1+R2345+R6=30+13.33+10=53,33ohm
U=I4*Rv=4*53.33=213,33V

213,33V is not correct...

is this a homework or school assignment?

It's homework that I already made and got back - I want to know why it's not correct. So I know how to solve it when needed.

In the diagram, I4 = 4A omits the current through R5, which must be added to get total current at the voltage source.

What was your final outcome for the voltage:

total resistance:

total current:

Guest, This is a typical exercise on Ohm's law. I suggest you start with simplifying the circuit: Next to the 10 ohms, where the current is measured is a parallel circuit of 2 resistors of 20 ohms - giving you:.............. ohms. The current of 4 amps will also run through this branch.

But what is the 40 ohm resistor doing there? That takes also current? If yes, how much? If you know how much current runs through the branch, where the 40 ohms is in parallel with, the total current can be calculated.

Once you have done this (solved the resistor circuit) - you can calculate the total current and the series circuit through 30 ohms on the left and your calculated resistor value and the 10 ohms to the right is the ohms value to calculate with.

Then with your current you can solve your home work.

The rest is up to you. Post your results when you found them.

Think again which resistors are in parallel and which are in series. Look also at the currents sums. It is the application of basic laws in electricity.

The OP got the total resistance (53 1/3 ≈ 53.33 Ω) right in the first place, but just omitted the additional current through R5. Since he has now figured it out, it won't spill the beans to note the total current is 6A at 320 V. (Disregarding any internal resistance in the voltage source.)

Tornado. How do you get that "ohm" sign and the "about equal" in there? I have Windows XP with google chrome and I cannot get anything that is not on my keyboard in there. Is there hope? And pictures or diagrams?

In the CR4 menu bar above the window where you compose posts, the Ω symbol pulls down about 200 special characters, including upper- and lower-case Greek. The smiley insert menu is right next to it. To make the greyed-out items work, you have to select some text and then apply the option. That gives you boldface, italics, underlining, strike-through, subscripts, and superscripts. For pictures or diagrams, select the camera and then insert a suitable file (I don't know what types are supported).

I'm not sure if or how this interacts with or depends on the word processor your browser normally uses.

Thanks for answering. I do not have any CR4 menu bar. Do I need to download it somewhere or is it software- or system- related?

Should I use a different operating system? I have google chrome on Windows XP.

When I can make it to the US one of these weeks I probably can buy a adapter for my macbook, because that quit also. There i use Safari - does that work?

Besides being able to create some white spaces, That window makes me type and feel like an idiot. (which I might be?) When I make something in Word, the window doesn't want it.

Boy, you've got me there. I thought that the menu bar I get was from CR4, but maybe it is being imported from Windows Internet Explorer (??) This computer has Corel WordPerfect, but I'm pretty sure it's not from there. Others have been mystified by this as well, to judge from some of the questions, so welcome to the club....

What I thought was a CR4 menu also has bullets, numbered lists, indentation, a spell checker, and a format "paintbrush" in it, none of which I have ever used.

We might perhaps bring it into the forum to check out how others coop with it too? It is really a handicap to only be able to write something simple without having a horn or a bell. Thank you so much for the reply. Meanwhile I will try if I get IE to work it out.

This has been discussed before on CR4. Menu bar does not work with Google Chrome (or at least I have never been able to get it to work). I just use IE for CR4 if I want that facility.

Hi Tornado, When I work it through IE, the bar appears. I will try this, although all the thread pass through Chrome, so it will be one or the other. Unless there is someone who knows the trick to work with Google Chrome. Thanks for the help. Dolf

I have several browsers, with FIREFOX it appears, with SAFARI not. I did not check with GOOGLE CHROME yet.

Hi

from the given schemetic diagram, current through the voltage source is 6 Amp. and total voltage of the source is 320 V.
