Heaviest Equipment Transported in Hydro-Plant

05/06/2010 2:08 AM

I am working for a mega hydro- project. We are doing preliminary study on road and bridge network that might be required for transportation of heavy E-M equipment from its manufacturing site to Project site. Since project is in a mountainous terrain, the only transportation mode is via. road.

Since we will be assembling generator at site. I am assuming the heaviest equipment that need to be transported will be transformer which transported as a built-unit. We will have 3 single phase transf. forming a bank.

Is it correct to assume that, heaviest weight that need to be transported would be transformer?

Give me some inputs.

That would be one likely candidate; another would be the rotor or stator of the largest turbine, or the crane to lift it into place.

Sometime around the middle of the last century, there was an incident in which an electromagnetic coil weighing around 200,000 pounds (turbine or cyclotron or what, I don't remember). When the truck arrived at the destination, the coil was missing! How such a thing vanished without the driver noticing is hard to figure. Of course, they retraced the route in search of it, but no luck.

About 20 years later, a swamp next to the road was being drained, and an enormous object was found. This baffled everyone as much as the original driver, until someone finally put two and two together.

My wife and I once passed a 58-wheeler, including 4 axles of 8; which is about what it would take for a task like this.

Check with the component manufacturers for the various weights--and use really strong bungees to tie them down! Also check dimensions as they relate to bridges, tunnels, overpasses, etc.

Tornando, thanks. The incident you narrated is interesting.

Usually, what I observed was that, rotor and stator is built at site right from the scratch by the contractor for big machine. Maybe another aspect I need to consider is weight of shaft which actually get transported in one solid piece. I have also seen that turbine parts get like housing and all get transported in segments too.

As for the EOT crane, doesn't't it get transported in segments??

Hi Meri,

EOT Crane can be transported in the segments such as Main Girders, End Carriages, Crab, Platform (Walkway), Control Panel, Cabin etc. Crane is assembled and erected at the site. Heavies item is Girder which long steel box. How ever you have check if long Girders can be negotiated on road bends on the mountain road. Also the weight bearing capacity of the bridges/ culverts.

Rotor/Stator is generally the heaviest unit that is transported for this type of project. Although transformers are big they are not as dense as the rotor/stator. Transformers for power stations have alot of open space within them to hold the oil for cooling them.

Also it is best to assemble the generator as completely as possible in the manufacturer's shop to keep our debris and other junk.

Please get in touch with the equipment supplier. They take care of transportation feasibility at the design stage itself. Hydro-generator stator, depending on the power rating and speed can be designed in number of segments which are wound at works leaving ends open. These segments are assembled at site and complete winding connections are made. As regards rotor is concerned, it can be assembled (Rim and yoke portion) at site. Magnetic poles are dispatched separately. So in all probability transformer would be the heaviest lift. Some of the hydro turbine parts may also be critical for transportation. This would depend on type of turbine.

What you are thinking is absolutely correct. For Large Hydro plants single phase transformers are generally the heaviest equipment to be transported, to minimise the transportation weight of the transformer it is to be transported in gas (nitrogen) filled condition and finally oil shall be filled at site during erection.

other critical heavy weight items to be transported are:

1. Spherical Valve - if it is a high head plant or Butterfly Valve for Low head plant.

2. Turbine shaft -

3. Some of the Construction Civil Equipment
