Dear Jayesh100375,

Happy to see your Deep Intrest for BOE EXAM. FOR YOUR EXPERIENCE AND INTREST PASSING BOE EXAM IS VERY SIMPLE. Please do the following.

1. You have not mentioned in which State you are working. In which state you want to appear for the B.O.E Exam.

2. You approach the OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR OF BOILERS,OR CHIEF INSPECTOR OF BOILERS (as the case may be) where you want to appear for BOE EXAM, and find out the Exam schedule and take the application at the appropriate time and apply enclosing the service certificate etc as found in the application. SEE THAT YOU ARE SATISFYING THE CONDITIONS STIPULATED IN THE APPLICATION, and appear for the Exam.

3. There are several books very deep in design as well as operations. It is not known whether you are intrested in Design or Operations only.

Try to get the previous exam question papers and try to understand the nature of the subject involved. the topics covered are very wide ranging from design and construction of boiler, fuel and combustion, heat transfer, air-fuel ratio, water treatment, super heaters, economisers etc. etc. BUT NO NEED TO WORRY.

Try to get a book which deals in a QUESTION and ANSWER FORMAT for the entire Boiler Operation/Design. With your experience passing B.O.E with DISTINCTION should not be a problem. B.O.E Exam is simple. About 22 years back I was one of the EXAMINERS for B.O.E EXAMS.

Please provide your mail Id. and I may be helpful to you.

4. You may brouse many web-links/books/articles to match to your need by using google search or going to www.askjeeves.com, or any other search engines.

5. You may have 4 theory papers and one viva-voce.

ABOVE ALL I WISH YOU GOOD LUCK.

Dear DHAYANANDHAN.S

Just as you replied Jayesh100375 that passing of BOE exam is very simple, I would like to ask you some simple questions.

1) A boiler with no stamp. How would you size the safety valve.?

2) Two boilers were burnt with the same quality of coal & their flue gas analysis gave the identical reports. Are their efficiencies the same.? If yes, why.? If no, why not.?

Hope, you answer me these simple questions in mimimum possible time.

Dear Mr. Mohnish.powermech,

Your QUESTION can be viewed in TWO DIFFERENT ANGLE.

1. POSITIVE SIDE 2.NEGATIVE SIDE.

I TAKE YOUR QUESTION ON POSITIVE SIDE, and my reply is:

A BOILER WITHOUT STAMP SHOULD NOT or MUST NOT BE USED. The concerned Officer who accepted the Boiler without STAMPING should be questioned/action taken against him/terminate him and SEIZE HIS QUALIFICATION DEGREE/DIPLOMA

ON YOUR QUESTION FOR SIZING SAFETY VALVE THE REPLY IS on the BASIS ACADEMICAL ASPECT OR ACADEMICAL INTREST POINT OF VIEW ONLY - I reply.

1. Estimate the Heating Surface and MULTIPLY by the STANDARD for the EVAPORATION RATE. This gives the CAPACITY OF THE BOILER.

The Thickness of Drum. Bank Tubes, Super Heater Coils, Economiser Coils, Super Heater Steam Pipe going out of the valve etc. etc., can be measured/estimated. Apply the formula and calculate the Pressure and adopt the LOWEST of ALL THE PRESSURES as the Design Pressure of the Boiler.

Now Capacity is estimated, Design Pressure is estimated, and how to size the safety Valve is the next exercise. Super Heated Steam Pipe size is known, and hence AREA CAN BE CALCULATED. CAPACITY IS ESTIMATED and hence VOLUME of STEAM FLOW/SECOND is estimated. Using the Standard Velocity, based on these data, STEAM TEMPERATURE CAN BE ESTIMATED. HENCE SAFETY VALVE CAN BE SIZED.

COMING TO YOUR 2nd QUESTION " Two boilers were burnt with the same quality of coal & their flue gas analysis gave the identical reports. Are their efficiencies the same.? If yes, why.? If no, why not.?" -

The ANSWER IS THE BOILER EFFICIENCY WILL NOT BE THE SAME. The same quantity of Fuel and the Same Flue Gas Analysis are not the ONLY CRITERION for BOILER EFFICIENCY. The other criteria are, as you also know - the Feed Water Temp., the Blow-Down Quantity, Radiation Level of the Boiler(s), F.D Air Temp., Flue Gas Temp. after Air Heater, The Furnace Leakages, HEAT TRANSFER CO-EFFICIENTS for Boiler Bank Tubes, Super Heater etc. etc., will come in to account - which may vary in the boiler(s) singly or severally.

ON THE NEGATIVE ASPECT OF THE QUESTION - I do not reply since you may get offended.

The delay in reply is due to the reason - I DID NOT SEE THIS due to pressure of work and out of station for several days. However, the delay is regretted. Any further quiery or doubt you can ask.

Thanks.

Really thanks Sir for the answers. The above questions were being asked for the American Boiler Proficient Engineers & so do I. I have many such questions & if you want, I'll ask them for the maximum so as to derive the most appropriate & correct answers for the same.

Re: B.O.E Boiler Proficiency

1) Where would you find the pressure piping stamp on a steam header of a boiler that requires two (2) stop valves located 50 feet apart?

2) Before a person enters boiler, what do you need to do.?

3) Given: A 700 psi boiler drum, 36 inch diameter, and length 24 feet. What code would you reference to insure that a blow off tank was sufficiently built to handle this?

4) After a repair has been made and inspected by the Authorized Boiler Inspector, what else must be done?

5) What is the HP required for a feed water pump that is 80% efficient supplying a boiler with 200 psi?

6) With two boilers both at 100 hp one operating at 50 psi and the other at 100 psi would both safety valves be the same size?

All the above questions were asked in American Boiler Proficiency examination.
