Trolley On Rails Question

05/10/2010 10:10 AM

I need to make a trolley to run on rail tracks 1metre wide.

I have the rail tracks and the trolley I want to make is of 1m x 1m, and running on a rail track of 3 metres lenght.

Can someone help to give sketch of how to make this trolley and the what material is required as regarding wheels (max 6inch in diameter) and sections, rollers, shafts and bearings.

I wish to use the trolley for big injection moulds (upto 8/10Tons) e.g chair mould.

The trolley should have a flat surface, so also I need to know the plate of which thickness to use and all round the trolley a 6-8" height cage for the mould not to fall off.

Also how to push the trolley, can it be done manually or by TIRFOR.

I will appreciate reply with a sketch.

Thanking You all.

Good luck. If you truly understand what the cart is to do you shouldn't have any trouble making a rough sketch and parts list.

Too much like homework cheating for me.

Bye.

Rail vehicle design has been going strong for a couple of hundred years. The thing that non-rail mechanical engineers stumble on when applying themselves to this field is the wheel design and selection. The tread ideally wants to be coned, and not flat, much like a rail vehicle wheel is shaped. The reason is that the wheelset then travels along the rails in a similar way to a toboggan in a toboggan run, steering itself, and thereby presenting the least rolling resistance.

8-10 tons on 1 metre gauge looks a fairly bog-standard application. Can an existing rail vehicle manufacturer help with equipment supply, thereby obviating the need to design - Permaquip Ltd. (usual disclaimer), perhaps?
