Code Comedy

05/15/2010 11:03 PM

Hello all,

My dad's 60th birthday is coming up and my sister and I are working on a picture for him. We need some 'filler' material and, as he is a programmer, I thought some sort of 'comedic' section of code would be appropriate (I don't know what languages he works in, sorry, I do know he absolutely detests HTML). The only computer code I ever learned was basic; that was 20+ years ago and that's more than my sister can boast so I'm coming to you for help.

Anything that a 'code monkey' might find humorous or absurd will be considered, explanations would be appreciated. He's been programming since the mid 70's so archaic references are an excellent option.

BTW, I should have asked this about two weeks ago so time is critical

Thank you, thank you, thank you,

HS

The spaghetti code created for example in Basic while using the GOTO command might be a good example.

We used this GOTO and GOSUB commands to hide the true working of a program (primitive security).

How did it work ?

I can't remember the syntax but for example a line of code could be

LABEL1: IF A = B THEN GOTO LABEL2 ELSE GOTO LABEL3

.

.

.

LABEL2: IF A <> B THEN GOTO LABEL4 ELSE GOTO LABEL5

LABEL3: IF C = D THEN RETURN ELSE

This could go on forever and end in the code HAPPY BIRTHDAY

that's not bad, I may be able to work this in. I was hoping for something not in Basic but beggars can't be choosers...

Thanks

The GOTO will work in C , C# etc, as well.

public class Use_goto {
public static void Main() {
int i=0, j=0, k=0;

for(i=0; i < 10; i++) {
for(j=0; j < 10; j++ ) {
for(k=0; k < 10; k++) {
Console.WriteLine("i, j, k: " + i + " " + j + " " + k);
if(k == 3) goto stop;
}
}
}

stop:
Console.WriteLine("Stopped! i, j, k: " + i + ", " + j + " " + k);

}
}

After struggling through COBOL, FORTRAN, BASIC and PASCAL I don't feel like learning

C+-#.

When I saw the word VOID in the code I lost interest.

OK, I did a search on coder jokes, go down the first few and see what striked your fancy.

You might get some clue by where he works etc.

Try SCRATCH from MIT.

http://scratch.mit.edu/

You may even use one of the programs already there.

Not so much a code comedy, but saw this on a T-shirt and made me smile.

C:\Dos

C:\Dos\Run

Run\Dos\Run

Like I said, not code, but smiley.

BTW, Happy B'Day to HS Senior :-)

Did you see this "A Brief, Incomplete, and Mostly Wrong History of Programming Languages"

There might be bits you can use.

Turning 60, he's probably already seen every programming joke in the world. But I keep stumbling onto new material, so there's hope.

There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

We're looking for a few good programmers. Please send your resume to (bunch of ASCII codes in hex corresponding to a real address).

That's the best one, I get a Dilbert every day and collect some old ones as well.

And I am not a programmer, Dilbert works for me whatever discipline I am in at the time!

I like this one from the net

A programmer had been missing from work for over a week when finally someone noticed and called the cops.

They went round to his flat and broke the door down. They found him dead in the still running shower with an empty bottle of shampoo next to his body. Apparently he'd been washing his hair.

The instructions on the bottle said:

  • Wet hair
  • Apply shampoo
  • Wait 2 minutes
  • Rinse
  • Repeat

Why not make it personal, write him something in hexadecimal. Scroll down the wiki to see the humor section.

For number system jokes you might like to wonder why he sometimes celebrates XMAS nearly two months early.
It's because 31OCT = 25DEC

The actual joke is:

Why do programmers confuse Halloween and Christmas?

Not necessary a joke, but an age-old Programmer's question:

How much C could a C+ plus, if a C+ could plus C?

Re: Code Comedy

Thank you all for your help,

The picture should go in the mail today... I chose to keep it simple and represent his birthdate in binary and his age in hex...

Some good material came my way during this quest, but unfortunately most of it was not easy to translate into an image (or into english for that matter, do you have any idea how hard it is to get an artist to grock Oct25 = Dec31, and that it is funny)

Thanks again,

HS

OCT 31 = DEC 25

was funnier in the olden days, when programmers actually used octal.

...Or maybe the original pressed the neighboring key, because OCT 25 = DEC 21, not 31

The joke was presented incorrectly.

The actual Riddle is:

Q. Why do programmers confuse Christmas with Halloween?

A. Because DEC 25 = OCT 31

Share and Enjoy!
