Flanges for Precision Steel Tubes

05/18/2010 4:23 AM

Dear colleagues,

can you help me solve the problem of joining OD 70 precision steel tube with 3" (DN 80) steel pipe with flanges. It is easy to choose flange for 3" pipe, but what about flange for OD 70 tube - should it be custom made to fit to ansi pipe flange?

What other choice do you have? Custom-fit the 3" pipe flange to match some other nonstandard design on the tube?

A table of dimensions, a drill press, and a lathe can deal with this. And a gasket cutter, I guess. Put on your Nike shoes, and "JUST DO IT."

A custom-made one will probably be your only option as they don't make flanges for tubing, only pipe. The difference being that pipe is designed to convey a liquid/gas through it's ID and tubing is not.

That being said, I am curious why you are connecting tubing to pipe via a flange and want to provide some caution if it is part of a fluid/gas conveyance circuit; tubing is neither designed nor manufactured to accommodate that function.

If this was your intent, then may I suggest providing a little more information and we way be able to offer up a suitable alternative using the proper items for your need.

Thank you for your comment, but "tube" in my text refers to precision steel tube, made according to DIN 2391. "Tube" doesn't mean only tubular structural element but also kind of piping. In engineering terminology "tube" usually refers to such special pipe where intention is not only to transport fluid but to allow the fluid to exchange it's energy through the pipe wall with the surroundings. That is why you never find "pipes" in heat exchangers and sollar collectors, but only "tubes"!

Regards and thanks,

Ingeniarius

Very true... sorry, but my mind apparently forgot about such things as refrigerator tube, radiator tube, boiler tube just my experience is every tube I've used along this line has used a fitting connection, not a flange.

I honestly can't say that I have ever seen a tubing flange. I have hit up a few reference books, did a quick web search, and even called our piping supplier... he's never heard of a tubing flange either.

I think Tornado has already mentioned your best option... buy some bar stock and make one to match the 3" Flange.

Sorry, and good luck. Let us know what you came up with.

For any piping system with sizes not according to standard dimensions (in this case we call it as tubing), you can proceed a design for that flanges (WN, SO & SW) as a nonstandard. Where it is easily to select all dimensions of that nonstandard flange especially OD, Raised Face Dia., No. of Holes & Hole Dia. which are necessary to match with the standard flange.

Inqeniarius,

There are couple ways to connect tubing to pipe:

1. Use tubing to pipe adapter, and then regular piping flange

2. Use blind flange, drilled for tubing.
