I know DX = Direct Expansion (expansion/flashing of refrigerant to obtain cooling)

Yes, RS = refrigerant suction (vapor). RL = refrigerant liquid. As already described, DX = direct expansion.

While we're at it, TXV = thermostatic expansion valve, and SV = solenoid valve. As to compressors, FLA or RLA = rated load amps (normal running); LRA = locked rotor amps (compressor starting or stalled).

In ammonia refrigeration there can be a dozen or so different types of piping, each with similar designations.
