Silicone oil has many advantage over different oils for this field. The viscosity, minor aggressive towards other materials, stability in time, damping and response time, make it a suitable media for this purpose.

Silicon in an element on the periodic table, Si, atomic number 14. It is a solid at room temperature; it's melting point is 1410.0 °C. As the compound silicon dioxide, it is found in great abundance as the mineral silica, also in crystalline quartz.

I was unaware that silicon could be made into an oil.
