The Wikipedia article on glands covers all the glands in the human body. Each one has a small section of description.
I'm afraid that a small section of description is all you are going to be able to manage for steam turbine glands, specifically.
I would suggest that if you want to extend the article you are writing to several pages, you might compare different manufacturers and applications, such as power generating plants (atomic and fossil-fuel), steam ships, heating plants, etc., showing the various locations and styles of gland in each, making a comparison as to why different styles were used, etc.
Do some research, and you will find that one method involves use of carbon rings with minimal clearance to the shaft, stacked alternatly with washer-like spacers which are larger in inside diameter. Each carbon ring and washer combination form a labyrinth, so that critical pressure drop occurs across each. At critical pressure drop, the downstream pressure cannot be more than half the upstream absolute pressure. So by stacking between 5 and perhaps 8 stages as described, only a wisp of steam escapes on the high pressure side of the turbine. If the exhaust goes to a condenser under vacuum, it will be cold enough to use Teflon or graphited composition gland material if the shaft exits there. You do not want air to leak in at the condenser end, because it will appear as a non-condensible gas which must be removed in the steam system deaerator.
Not sure I completely understand the question. Any written material on steam turbines will have a comprehensive section on glands. What is it exactly that you are looking for?
Did you want specific book titles? Current research? Specs for one or another turbine manufacturer?
The one other thing that occurs to me is that on this single topic it would be difficult to write 30 to 50 pages of material, unless you were to try to compare different manufacturers' historical research and current measurement/materials/arrangements data. And even then, 20 pages would be pushing it. Bernie just did it in one sentence.
So please help me here. What exactly would you like to investigate?
Sir, I am assuming you are talking to me. I have finished the project report regarding the status of the gland sealing system. As always it will be 30-50 pages, written in Klingon and in your in-tray by tommorow morning.
