All over the map.

If you contribute good engineering that enables your team to win, ask for a better salary. If you don't get it, join another team and make them win. Then thumb your nose at the prior philistines (now losers).

My experience is in amateur racing (landspeed racing at Bonneville), not the high level profesional practice of Formula 1 teams. So I don't speak from the position of an insider.

I suspect they (the hiring folks in a Formula 1 organization wouldn't give your resume a second look if you couldn't show substantial knowledge and no small amount of reputation and experience in the design, performance and operational requirements of their types of race cars. In my opinion your salary per year could range from zero, you pay your own expenses and make an appointment before you come to visit their shops up to perhaps US$150,000 plus travel expenses for one who has demonstrated an ability to give a measurable edge to a professional race team and can make serious contributions under the heat of race competition schedules.

For example giving the right advice on the type of pit stop repairs to attempt to a race car that has sustained some damage during the race. You need to know what to do then and there and will have no time to study your notebook let alone do calculations or wind tunnel tests. Or for example knowing which of several dozen possible variations in a body design to test (and how to test them) in a schedule that has only enough time for two runs in the tunnel and a couple of detailed computer simulations.

Virtually every part of a Formula 1 race car has a multiple of functions. You must know and understand the interelationsips of all these functions before designing anything down to the tiniest fastener head. And if you are an engineer your knowledge is expected to be in actual numbers, not just "this is better than that" subjective "analysis".

Are you ready for that? Is the salary really important to you? Then you are looking in the wrong place to sell your talents unless you are very good at that business.

Autosport carry job adverts for the racing industry. I imagine it varies greatly from team to team the same as for drivers hence the richest teams tend to get the best staff.

There is an annual publication which lists the jobs & salaries in motor-sport but can't remember the name. I've seen it advertised in motor-sport magazines but can't track it down. Does anyone else know?

I'm guessing, but a team like Force India might get help from students back in India for little or nothing. I know I would volunteer for free just for the experience!

Adrian Newey reportedly makes several million a year.

Last time I looked into it, there was an order of magnitude difference between team budgets (some 40 to 400 million U$). There should be just as much, if not MORE, of a difference between the pay of individuals on each team.

So my answer . . . is pretty much the same as everyone else's. There is no "scale" my friend. There is no "standard pay." And, no matter how much we want it to be so, sometimes there is no simple answer.

Although I agree that the team budgets vary as you say, I imagine that the pay difference may be less than this order of magnitude not greater as the bigger teams employ considerably more people than the smaller teams. They also maintain more expensive facilities.

Thank you, and you are quite possibly correct in a general since.

However, I feel the two extrema I mentioned more than adequately illustrate my "order of magnitude" theory.

I suppose the only answer to the question, "How much does an F1 Aerodynamicist make?" is to pick an individual and say that if your skill set is comparable to this person's, you might reasonably expect to make as much (if you were to be hired by a team with comparable funding and an equivalent emphasis on the importance of Aero over say, reliability or horse power).

Look man, I honestly don't think ANYONE on the F1 pit wall is there because of the money. Sure, the pay may be good, but it's not what I would call steady employment. Racing is an adventure. I spent five years on various pit walls stateside. I made money doing it, but that was beside the point. I did it for the triumph and tragedy of every moment. I quit it because it is NOT steady employment. Sponsors drop out, and sometimes paychecks don't come. I ALSO decided it was better to have a job that allowed me to come home every night.

Now I have an office and a desk. I love my job and my family and my house. Still, I miss the smell of race fuel at dawn.

It would be a private matter, one might <...expect...>.
